Alocasia reginula ‘Black Velvet’
Family: Araceae (Aroids)
Alocasia ‘Black Velvet’ is one of the best varieties of Alocasia to grow in a terrarium / vivarium set up as it stays compact, is relatively slow growing and thrives on the extra humidity, great for a dart frog vivarium. It is easy to see why this beauty is called ‘Black Velvet’ with its soft, thick, dark foliage. The black leaves are offset with light green – platinum silver veins providing a pleasing contrast. Misting velvet leaf plants can sometimes mark the foliage, it is better to raise ambient humidity by growing in a terrarium / vivarium, using a humidifier or sitting the pot on a tray filled with pebbles and a little water or moist sphagnum moss.
Grows up to 30cm. Leaves 10-15cm.
Allow top of soil to dry a little between watering. Prefers a little extra humidity and a little less water than most larger Alocasia.
Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun.
Prefers a coarse, free draining soil. We recommend our Aroid Potting Mix.
