Ananas comosus | Pineapple Plant

Ananas comosus | Pineapple Plant

Family: Bromeliaceae

Pineapple plants are terrestrial bromeliads that are native to the Orinocco basin in South America and distributed widely throughout the tropics. In Victorian times the pineapple plant was a real horticultural status symbol of luxury and they were grown in dedicated pineapple hot houses and pineapple pits. Victorian style cultivation of pineapples can be seen today at The Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall.
