Aroids | Araceae

The arum family, Araceae, contains approximately 114 genera and 3750 species. Commonly refferred to as aroids they can be found in both the Old and New World tropics and in temperate regions throughout the northern hemisphere.

All aroids have a distinct inflorescence called a spadix that stands erect on the end of the stem surrounded by a bract called a spathe. The majority of plants in the Araceae family contain calcium oxalate crystals which can have a rather unpleasant effect when consumed.
